Location Recce

Location Recce

This is a satellite view of Ravens Wood School, this is were we are going to do research and some production for this documentary. Also we will get interview(s) here from the music department because they will have a good understanding and opinion on music.
I have taken pictures of my own, I done this in the music room where I would like to do the interview with Tim Dullaway. This room is ideal for the interview because it has a lot of music equipment around which will help the audience of our interview understand immediately that it is about music. This room is good because it is spacious, so I could maybe get lights in there as well to give the interview a much more professional look.

Charity Research

Crisis charity

Research found at the following websites

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crisis_(charity)Who are they and What do they do?

Crisis is a charity that supports the needs from homeless people. This charity was founded in 1967. Crisis offer food, shelter and man other vital services such regarding well being. The main aim that Crisis look towards is to completely transform the lives of homeless people also to keep people from becoming homeless. They believe that "Homelessness won't end overnight or on our own.  But we take a lead, collaborate with others and, together, make change happen" Crisis also work even at Christmas to ensure that everyone homeless has somewhere to sleep and eat.

Why do they do it?

They believe that they can help make all homelessness end and even stick to their own motto 'Homelessness ends here'

Campaigns

In 2011 Crisis decided to make a campaign called 'No one turned away' this helped ensure that all homeless people had the right to emergency accommodation when they need it. This is because homeless people were not considered a priority when it came to social housing.  Another campaign they introduced was the 'Shared Accommodation Rate' Single people aged under 25 who live in the private rented sector are only entitled to the Shared Accommodation Rate of Housing Benefit, equivalent to the rent for a single room in a shared house rather than the rate for a self-contained one bedroom property.

My View on the crisis charity

I think that the Crisis charity are an extremely important organization that do something that is very important to many people. I feel that this organization should be largely publicized as they help many homeless people across the UK not only find them homes but jobs and help them learn trades. This charity is imperative to many people spread across Britain and I think that it deserves much more attention and for this particular reason I shall be creating a stop motion animation piece regarding what this charity does.

MoodBoard (Animation: Crisis)

Powerpoint pitch

Second slide: The Van Susans, are a local band from Bromley, they have lately grown in the U.K music scene, headlining venues such as the indigo2. They frequently get compared to bands like Mumford and sons, because they have a similar sound.

Third slide(Oz): We plan to interview bass guitar player Tim Dullaway who plays in the Van Susans.

Forth Slide(Rob): We have Researched this band extensively. As you can see here this is part of our research, it is from the local newspaper the Newshopper, this helped us get background information on the band.

Fifth Slide(Rob): Here are some of the possible questions we may ask Tim Dullaway during the interview. Here is a short video of them playing at a venue in Camden.

Sixth Slide: Video

Seventh Slide(Rob): The Main Purpose of this interview is to see what working in the music industry is really like from someone who is alreadt working in it, and also to see what it's like trying to rise up within the industry. But at the end of the day this interview is going to be done because this band is interesting and  have actually achieved some impressive accolades so far, I feel this will keep the audience interested in the band and hopefully afterwards have the audience look into them a little more.

Our Idea will be unique because unlike other interviews we have researched, this will be more of a personal account of one band member and what his thoughts are on some of out questions.

The Van Susans have cultivated a large fan base over the years, so by having an up to date interview this will keep existing fans happy, but most importantly bring interest and new people to the band.

The plans we've put in place to record our interview are...

Eighth Slide(Oz): We plan to rent a camera from the schools media department, also we'll use the schools music studios/rehearsal rooms to film the interview in the school, this will look good as there are many instruments around this room and on the walls.

Analysis of Interview

WWW
: I feel that our objective was explained clearly and quickly at the start of the pitch. I also think that using cue cards to present information to the listeners was also a very good idea because they didn't have to stare at a screen in order to find out what was going to happen for our interview. I think the information is much easier to take in and explain by talking to the listeners as some may not be interested in reading all of each slide. So we decided to keep the information on screen as minimal as possible without not having anything to show.

EBI: I think that the pitch of our interview could have gone slightly better in terms of presenting lots more of our research to the listener's however I don't think that was the main issue at all. I feel that the feedback has also shown us what we can do to make our interview much more unique and a lot less like the previous interviews that we have researched. We also gained one last imperative piece of feedback which was based on the questions. Some of the possible questions were very bland and were rather standard in terms of seeing them occur in music interviews with bands or band members. So we suggest that we should think of some more unique questions to ask Tim within the interview in order to give it a unique feel to it instead of it seeming like another interview with a Van Susans member in a similar fashion. We hope to make ours seem unique and stand out from the others.

Evaluation of Stop Motion Formats

Stop Motion Animation Formats

Claymation

Clay animation is a very effective and simple way of making a stop-motion animation, because of this it is one of the most popular styles of animation to date. The use of clay within animations has been seen in various films and T.V programs, these include; Pingu, Wallace & Gromit, Chicken Run and The Corpses Bride. The Land Rover LR2 advert is a good example of claymation, as it has a model replica of the car they are advertising and the enviroment it is made out of clay and the ever changing environment symbolises how the car can handle any terrain. Clay is great for this advert as it can change and mould into different things, giving a textured and eye-catching look to the piece. This advertisement was filmed in the classic stop-motion, where motion is created through still pictures, where you get a series of stills and play them in order to create a sequence. The reason why I think they have marketed this product with the use of Clay animation is to give it a younger, fun and family orientated connection to the product, and also by using this method it makes this advert stand out compared to other live/real-footage ones.

A great example of a successful claymation brand is Wallace and Gromit, this iconically British duo started in 1989 with the first of many claymation movies which are still going today with there most resent in 2005 with,'The curse of the were-rabbit', but there latest endevour has been a TV series called, 'Wallace & Gromits world of invention'. Wallace and Gromit is aimed at children for family viewing, so it appeals mostly to children but older people will still get enjoyment out of it as well. This is made in the same way as the Land Rover advert, Aardman studios make clay models and armatures  these are used as the 'actors' so they need motion so they will be slowly, carefully and most important accurately moved, whilst the camera will sometimes slowly sometimes rapidly take many stills pictures, these will be played in order and will give the illusion of motion.

A good example of paper-cut out animation would be Captain Pugwash. Captain Pugwash was a paper-cut out animation aimed at children which was first published in 1950 but in 1957 the BBC commissioned a short series of short cartoon films. Originally shot in black and white but quickly getting transferred to colour with the advances of film technology around that time period. Captain Pugwash was produced using the paper-cut out technique, this is basically drawing the character on paper then cutting it out, this is a very time consuming technique. The show doesn't run anymore but later on after it generated mass popularity with the children of U.K, the BBC started to generate the cartoon with computers, this made it a lot easier and less time consuming to produce.

There is a lot of interesting ways people have used stop motion animation to depict a story, it is quite popular to use lego for stop motion as it isn't particularly messy and is extremely easy and quick to use, this is because the armatures are already constructed and ready to use, also just using lego to build backdrops/backgrounds is quick and simple to do as well. On popular video websites I've been able to view some advertisements for Lego using the stop motion technique, these are aimed at children because thats the target audience for this product.

Conclusion
In my opinion if I had to use one of these formats for filming a stop motion animation I'd defiantly me more incline to using Lego as it is a lot easy to handle and doesn't create to much mess, nevertheless I'd still consider claymation, as I feel it gives a much more textured look to the animation and I do like that its so malleable, but in saying this I don't like that its very messy by leaving oily stains/marks on surfaces and also that it takes a long time to mould in your hands because it has to be warmer to shape/mould.

Documentary Planning

Our Documentary is on how popular music has changed through time. This documentary idea is very interesting because it has changed a lot since the 40's and there a lot of factors within music to talk about and debate about now. We can compare the past musical icons to the modern-day musical equivalents, E.G: Rolling Stones to The Black Keys. We would use archive footage of past events and get our own interviews with people that have something to say about music.
Interviews we are going to get from people in the industry...

Van Susans

After this 'Montage' we will introduce the topic of 'How pop music has changed through time'.

Opening

This section of the documentary shall set the scene of what the documentary shall be based on. Our opening shall show many of the different ages of pop music. Here we shall opening the documentary most likely with a voice over explaining 'music is in a constant change but is it for better or for worse?'

Middle Of Documentary

We will speak to the general public and musicians/bands giving them interviews to get there views and opinions on the topic. When we speak and ask questions to the public, we will talk to a range of different people from different ages so the documentary is fairly balanced. This portion of the documentary shall have factual information within it. We shall analyse some of the many genres of the current time and possibly give a slight rhetorical question for the audience to make their own decision on which leads into the next section of the documentary.

End

At the end of the documentary we do not want to be seen as being judgmental towards certain genres of pop music. So as I explained before we shall give the audience a slight mode of a rhetorical question for them to make their own mind up on what they prefer in terms of pop music. This shall end it on a conclusion without being seen to be slanderous or judgmental.
